5 Step Visual Sequencing Chart

For routines that need a little more stamina.

Some children can follow a few steps easily — but longer tasks can feel overwhelming once the steps start to add up.

The 5-Step Visual Sequencing Chart builds on the structure of the 3-step version, helping children gradually develop the stamina, organisation, and focus needed to complete longer routines and multi-step tasks.

By clearly showing what comes first, next, and what comes after, visual sequencing reduces cognitive load and helps children stay engaged until the task is finished.

Designed with neurodivergent learners in mind, this tool supports children who benefit from visual supports, predictable structure, and reduced language processing demands.

Why visual sequencing works

Visual sequencing supports children to:

• follow multi-step routines and instructions• improve task completion and persistence• strengthen executive functioning and organisation• build left-to-right visual tracking for early literacy• develop confidence and independence

When children can see the sequence, the task feels clearer — and finishing becomes much more achievable.

Perfect for

The 5-Step Sequencing Chart is ideal for routines that are slightly more complex than a simple 3-step task.

Use it for:

morning or after-school routines

classroom learning tasks

life skills and independence building

literacy activities and story sequencing

task completion and organisation

This longer format helps children practise staying with a task for longer, gradually building attention, stamina, and independence.

How it works

  1. Place visuals in the top row (To Do) in the correct order.

  2. The child begins with Step 1.

  3. Once completed, move the visual to the Done section.

  4. Continue through the sequence until the task is finished.

This movement provides clear visual feedback, helping children see their progress as they complete each step.
